Movement Starts with You: The Power of Leading by Example

Kids pick up on everything. They don’t just listen to what we say—they watch what we do. We can talk about the importance of staying active, playing outside, or being healthy, but at the end of the day, if they don’t see us living those values, it’s not going to stick.

Why Movement Matters — For You and For Them

Movement isn’t just about staying fit. For children, it improves motor skills, builds focus, and boosts creativity. For adults, it becomes a powerful tool to manage stress, reclaim personal time, and find consistency in a life that may feel overwhelming at times.

And the best part? Your kids notice everything.

I’ve seen kids get super excited about learning a particular stretch because “mumma does this in the morning too!” Or a little one proudly showing off their push-up plank position because their dad taught them.

These small things? They stay. And they add up!

There’s a parent in one of my condo classes who has been actively prioritizing their health and fitness—showing up consistently, putting in the effort, and really making a change. When I spoke to them, I congratulated them not just on achieving their personal goals, but on something even bigger: showing their child what it means to commit to movement, health, and discipline. And that is such a powerful lesson to pass on.

What Kids Really Learn When They Watch You

When your child sees you prioritizing movement, they’re not just learning to value health. They’re picking up on so much more:

Discipline: The power of showing up, even when you don’t feel like it.

Commitment: Sticking to a routine.

Joy in effort: Enjoying the process, not just the results.

Self-respect: Taking time for yourself and your well-being.

Balance: That health and happiness can go hand in hand.

These lessons go far beyond physical activity—they shape mindset, self-worth, and confidence.

If You’ve Been Wanting to Start…

I know it’s not always easy. Between work, the house, and family responsibilities, your own needs often come last. But if you’re waiting for the perfect time, let this be a reminder that it doesn’t have to be big or perfect to be meaningful. Start small, start real.

Here are a few simple ways to ease back into movement:

• 🏃‍♀️ Start with a 10-minute walk after dinner — take the kids along!

• 💃 Put on music and dance around the living room with them.

• 🧘 Try a weekend class — yoga, dance, anything that excites you.

• 👫 Join a fitness group within your society (or start one!)

• 🏌️ Play a sport — any sport that you enjoy!

• 🎯 Make movement a part of family bonding time.

These little shifts create big changes—not just in your life, but in how your kids see and experience movement as a natural, joyful part of everyday life.

To Our 505 Family… Keep Going

Honestly, it makes me so proud to be surrounded by the incredible parent community at Five-0-Five. You continue to inspire not just your children, but us too. So many of you are already on this journey—showing up for yourselves, making movement a priority, and in the process, setting an example for your kids that will shape them for life. It’s not always easy, but you’re doing it.

To all the 505 parents, students, and extended family—keep going. Keep inspiring. Keep making movement a part of your life and keep sharing your stories with us so that the community can learn from our shared experience. Because whether you realize it or not, your kids are watching, learning, and following your lead. And that’s incredible!
